The Cursed Harvest
A Halloween One-Shot Adventure
Table of Contents
Introduction
The Cursed Harvest is a Halloween one-shot adventure where players become trapped in a twisted pocket realm called the Harvest Realm β a fogbound nightmare of corrupted fields and vengeful pumpkins.
At the heart of this cursed land stands The Great Pumpkin Lord, a monstrous spirit born from pride, poison, and dark magic. To escape, the players must navigate encounters with living pumpkins, face the tragic Gentleman Pumpkin, and ultimately destroy the corrupted harvest before the realm claims them forever.
This adventure blends horror with dark fairy tale themes. The enemies are not purely evil β they are victims of a curse, twisted beyond recognition. The Gentleman still shows glimpses of his former kindness, but madness has taken hold. Victory comes not just from combat, but from understanding the tragedy that created this nightmare.
Adventure Hooks
Use one of these hooks to draw the players into the Harvest Realm:
- The Missing Travelers: Several merchants and travelers have vanished on the road near Hollowfield over the past month. The local authorities offer a modest reward (50 gold) for anyone willing to investigate. The party is either hired for the job, or they're traveling the same road and stumble into the fog themselves.
- The Desperate Letter: A sealed letter arrives for one of the players, delivered by a nervous courier. Inside is a hastily written plea: "The harvest won't end. The fog won't lift. They're coming for us. Please β if you ever cared for me, come to Hollowfield." It's signed by an old friend, mentor, or family member. When the party arrives, there's no village β only fog, and a weathered sign.
- Caught in the Mist: The party is simply traveling at dusk when the fog rolls in. No hook needed β the Harvest Realm pulls them in. One moment they're on a familiar road, the next they're standing before the "Welcome to Hollowfield" sign, with no memory of how they got there. The only way out is forward.
Background Story
The Farmer and His Pride
Many harvests ago, a kind farmer known as the Hollowfield Gentleman lived peacefully on his land. He was beloved by travelers and neighbors alike β always greeting visitors with warmth and generosity. His farm was famous across the countryside for producing the largest, most magnificent pumpkins anyone had ever seen. Each year, he entered his greatest pumpkin into the autumn competition, and each year, he won.
But his success attracted envy.
A wealthy buyer came to his door, demanding he sell the land so it could be razed and rebuilt. The Gentleman refused. "This soil has been good to me," he said. "I will not betray it for coin."
The buyer left in anger. Days later, the Gentleman's crops began to wither and die. The water had been poisoned. His life's work β his pride β rotted in the fields.
The Witch's Gift
Desperate, the Gentleman wept among the dying vines. That's when she appeared β a wandering witch, cloaked and smiling. She offered him a gift: a glowing potion that would bring his harvest back to life.
"I can restore what was lost," she whispered. "Give them this⦠and they will grow again."
The Gentleman, trusting and broken, poured the potion over his fields. The pumpkins stirred. Their vines twitched. They grew tall and vibrant once more. Overjoyed, the Gentleman made a feast that night β pumpkin soup, warm and sweet, made from his restored harvest.
He did not know the potion was cursed.
The Transformation
By morning, the Gentleman's skin had turned orange and rough. His head felt heavy. His thoughts... slipped. The pumpkins in the field were no longer still β they giggled, they moved, they watched him.
And the greatest pumpkin β his pride, the one meant for the competition β had grown massive, grotesque, and alive.
The curse consumed him. The Gentleman became a creature of pumpkin and flame, his memories fractured. He remembers only pride, celebration, victory β and betrayal. His kindness remains, but twisted. He sees strangers as threats. He performs for them, but with madness in his eyes.
The Great Pumpkin Lord, born from his greatest ambition, rules the cursed fields as a tyrant. The Harvest Realm β a pocket of reality warped by the witch's curse β traps anyone who enters. The fog does not lift. The harvest does not end.
Until someone breaks it.
The road winds through the autumn fields, their withered stalks whispering in the chill wind. Evening settles like a heavy blanket, and with it comes a creeping fog β thick, cold, and strangely silent.
At first, it clings to the ground, curling around your boots. But soon, it swallows the path entirely, turning the world into shades of gray. The scent of damp soil and rot fills your nostrils, and somewhere in the distance⦠a single bell tolls.
Your torches flicker. The air feels wrong β heavier, older. You call out to one another, but your voices seem swallowed by the mist.
Then, just as suddenly as it came, the fog parts. You find yourselves standing next to a wooden sign which creaks on rusty hinges, the words barely legible through the grime:
"Welcome to Hollowfield."
Somewhere beyond the fields, a faint orange glow flickers β like lanternsβ¦ or perhaps, fire. And behind you, the fog closes in once more.
What the Players Can Do
The fog has sealed behind them β there is no turning back. The only way forward is toward the orange glow in the distance.
Give the players time to discuss and decide their approach:
- Do they move cautiously through the fields, weapons drawn?
- Do they call out, trying to find other people?
In the distance, through the twisted silhouettes of dying trees, you see a strange light. Three enormous pumpkins stand in the middle of a misty, marsh-like field. Flickering flames dance behind their carved grins, casting eerie shadows that sway across the fog. Somewhere beyond them, a violin plays β slow, mournful, and out of tune.
As you step closer, the air grows heavy and damp. The ground beneath your feet softens β and thenβ¦ begins to move.
At first, it's only a rustle. Then the brittle vines around your boots twitch β and something small claws its way up from the mud.
First one. Then three. Then dozens.
Tiny pumpkins with crooked smiles and twig-like limbs drag themselves free, giggling in high-pitched, unnatural tones. They turn toward you β and charge, their laughter echoing through the fog.
Combat Encounter
Enemies: 7 Pumpkinlings (1 per player)
Tactics: The small pumpkins attack in a horde, hopping and giggling. They try to surround the players and bite at their ankles. When a Pumpkinling dies, it explodes in a small fireball!
Death Burst: When a Pumpkinling dies, all creatures within 5 ft. must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, they take 1d4 fire damage, on a success half damage (rounded down).
What the Players Can Discover
After the battle, small pulpy lumps remain from the dead Pumpkinlings. With a sharp eye, players can collect Pumpkin Residue from the remains.
Description: A handful of warm, sweet-smelling pulp that smells of smoke and soil.
Weight: 0.5 lbs
Use: Can be used as a base ingredient for Potion of Minor Regeneration.
π§ͺ Medicine or Nature Check (DC 13)
If a player examines the remains and spends 10 minutes:
- Success: They distill a Pumpkin Tonic (temporary potion).
- Failure: The remains mold or burn up in a small puff of fire.
π§ͺ Pumpkin Tonic
A warm, bubbling liquid in orange hues. Tastes sweet, but prickles on the tongue.
- Restores 2d6 HP.
- If the user rolls maximum healing, they also gain +1 AC for 1 round (pumpkin carapace effect).
- Goes bad after 24 hours.
From the largest pumpkin in the field, a tall figure rises β a man in a long dark coat and high-collared vest, his head a glowing, carved pumpkin.
He bows deeply. A warm orange light flickers within the hollow of his eyes, and when he speaks, his voice drips like molten wax:
"My dear guests⦠welcome to the Harvest Realm.
Once, this land belonged to the Great Pumpkin Lord β but he never understood what a true celebration requires. The harvest should not merely be enjoyedβ¦ it must be celebrated!
And tonight⦠we celebrate you."
With a flourish, he draws his blade, spinning it with dancer's grace before striking a pose. The wind stirs the fog around his boots as he bows once more.
"I am the Gentleman Pumpkin, and I challenge you to a duel! One strike for freedom⦠one for honor⦠and one⦠for flavor."
Social Interaction - Alternative to Combat
The players don't have to fight! The Gentleman loves theater and can be persuaded, deceived, or intimidated. He always reacts with theatrical enthusiasm first!
| Action | DC | Possible Reaction |
|---|---|---|
| Persuasion (DC 14-16) | 14-16 | They appeal to his honor ("A true gentleman doesn't force his guests to fight"). He agrees to let them pass and allows them to go inside to The Great Gourd. If they succeed on a Performance DC 14 check, he applauds and bows deeply. |
| Persuasion (DC 20) | 20 | They appeal so well to his honor and dignity that he joins them! "Oh! Finally someone with style and substance! Yes, The Great Gourd has oppressed me long enough β I will help you!" He fights by their side in Scene 5. |
| Deception (DC 15) | 15 | They pretend to be sent by The Great Pumpkin Lord. He bows deeply and offers them direct access to the throne room β which leads to the boss fight without combat. |
| Intimidation (DC 18) | 18 | They show power or presence that surpasses him. He lets them pass, but swears vengeance and may return later as a revenant spirit serving The Great Gourd. |
Combat Encounter - If Negotiation Fails
Enemy: 1 Gentleman Pumpkin (CR 2)
Tactics: The Gentleman fights with theatrical flair! He fights like a fencer β elegant, defensive, and with lots of smack talk. He uses his Fiery Insult ability to demoralize players ("Your swordplay is as flat as an undercooked pie!"). He prefers not to kill β he'd rather have a good show.
If defeated: He sinks dramatically to his knees, his pumpkin head flickering, and he whispers: "The harvest... still calls... the Great Gourd... he will rise..." β then explodes in orange flame and embers.
- React with character, not mechanics. He should always respond with theatrical enthusiasm first ("Oh! A new act begins!") before you tell them the outcome.
- Keep the combat option open. If the players fail or choose violence, the transition should feel natural: "How tragic⦠I had hoped we could be friends. But all good parties end in blood."
- Reward creativity doubly. A successful roleplay should give XP equal to defeating him in combat (450 XP for avoiding the fight through social interaction).
The Gentleman Pumpkin collapses to the ground. His inner light flickers once⦠then fades into darkness.
A sweet scent of burnt pumpkin fills the air, and the fog around you begins to tighten β drawing inward, as though being pulled toward a single point.
(Allow players to loot or take a breather here.)
Then, the ground begins to tremble. The enormous pumpkin at the center of the clearing splits open with a cracking sound, glowing with a fiery orange light β warm, yet deeply wrong.
From within, black roots lash outward like whips, reaching for you all!
πΈοΈ The Harvest's Grasp - Mechanics
Initiative: Not rolled. Each character must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 13) to avoid the sudden strike of the roots.
- Success: The player slips free and remains unrestrained.
- Failure: The roots wrap around the player's limbs, Restraining them and pulling them 10 feet toward the pumpkin.
Flavor description: "Cold, wet vines coil around your legs β their touch slick with soil and blood. You feel them tighten, dragging you toward the gaping maw of the pumpkin!"
π§ Player Options
- A restrained player can use an Action to make a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (DC 13) to break free.
- Other players can attack the roots directly (AC 10, HP 6 each).
- Each round, any restrained player takes 1d4 bludgeoning damage as the vines constrict.
βοΈ Transition to the Final Scene
Once at least one player reaches the pumpkin's opening β or once everyone is pulled to it β read aloud:
"The fog glows a burning orange. The ground shudders beneath your feet. Those still free rush toward the opening β those bound are dragged screaming into it. The light swallows you wholeβ¦ and then β everything goes black."
As you step through the gaping opening of the colossal pumpkin, the fog seals behind you like a closing gate. The air turns heavy and damp, thick with the sour scent of soil and decay.
The walls are alive β twisting roots and fleshy vines pulse like veins, faint glimmers of orange light coursing through them as though the chamber itself has a heartbeat.
Before you, the tunnel widens into a massive chamber. The floor is slick with writhing roots, glistening like wet muscle. At its center rises a monstrous form β a warped pumpkin the size of a cottage, its surface splitting with eyes and fanged maws that breathe mist into the air. A thick, slimy tongue hangs from its central mouth, and with every breath, a wave of warm fog rolls outward.
From the walls comes a deep rumbling β not speech, but words forming within the soil itself:
"They poisoned my soil... They cursed my harvest... And now YOU come to take what little remains?"
π«οΈ Tone & Theme
This is the Heart of the Harvest Realm β the Great Pumpkin Lord's throne room. He is not a demon, but a corrupted spirit of nature, twisted by imbalance and hunger. Once, he governed life and decay in harmony. Now, the cycle has broken β and his fury feeds the rot.
If players attempt to reason or speak with him, his voice rumbles slowly, each word forced as if dragged from the earth:
"I was... the greatest. The prize... the glory. They poisoned the soil... the witch twisted the harvest... And you... you come to finish what they started?"
Then, the ground shakes. The Great Pumpkin Lord's mouth splits open β and the roots begin to move. The final battle begins.
βοΈ Boss Fight - The Great Pumpkin Lord
Enemy: 1 The Great Pumpkin Lord (CR 2) + potentially 3 Pumpkinlings at 50% HP
Terrain: The slippery floor with writhing roots is difficult terrain. Thick fog reduces sight to 30 ft.
Tactics:
- Starts with Rooting Grasp to split the party and restrain players.
- Uses Devour Bite on weakened or isolated targets - tries to swallow them!
- At 50% HP (around 32 HP), he roars: "They thought... they could ruin me... but I... GREW!" β and his belly splits open, spawning 3 Pumpkinlings!
- Pumpkinlings can be used as shields (halves the first damage that hits him after spawning).
- When he dies, he whispers: "The harvest... was meant... to be... glorious..." β then explodes in Death Bloom - his final revenge!

Rewards & Conclusion
When The Great Pumpkin Lord Falls
As the Great Pumpkin Lord collapses, his massive form splits apart, releasing a final wave of fire and rot (Death Bloom). The chamber trembles. The writhing roots go still.
For a moment, there is silence.
Then, the fog begins to thin. The oppressive weight lifts from the air. The twisted vines that formed the walls of the Harvest Realm begin to crumble like ash.
If the players defeated The Gentleman Pumpkin earlier, his voice echoes faintly through the mist:
"At last... the harvest... ends. Thank you... for what I could not do..."
If The Gentleman became their ally (DC 20 Persuasion in Scene 3), he collapses beside them, his pumpkin head cracking and dimming. In his final breath, he whispers:
"It was... a good harvest, after all. Tell them... I tried to win..."
Escape
The fog parts, revealing the road they entered from. The fields of Hollowfield are gone β only empty soil remains. The curse is broken.
The players wake on the road outside the village, as if from a dream. But the pumpkin residue in their packs, the burns from exploding Pumpkinlings, and the faint scent of smoke are very real.
Hollowfield is free. The harvest is over.
Experience Points
Total XP per player:
- Scene 2 - Pumpkinlings: 175 XP (7 Γ 25 XP)
- Scene 3 - The Gentleman Pumpkin: 450 XP (combat or successful social interaction)
- Scene 5 - The Great Pumpkin Lord: 450 XP + 75 XP (3 Pumpkinlings at 50% HP)
- Bonus - Crafting Pumpkin Tonic: 50 XP
- Total: 1,200 XP per player (enough for level 1 β 2, or significant progress for level 2-3)
Treasure
Among the ashes of The Great Pumpkin Lord, the players find:
- 50 gold pieces (scattered coins from travelers who never escaped)
- Pumpkin Seeds (5) β Magical seeds that glow faintly orange. If planted, they grow into luminous pumpkins that provide light equivalent to a torch for 8 hours when carved.
- The Gentleman's Rapier (if he was defeated) β see Magic Items below
Magic Items
Weapon (rapier), uncommon (requires attunement)
This elegant rapier has a blade that flickers with faint orange flame. Its hilt is wrapped in charred vine.
Properties:
- You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
- Fiery Flourish (1/day): When you hit with an attack using this weapon, you can cause the attack to deal an extra 2d6 fire damage. The blade flares dramatically when you do so.
- Curse: While attuned to this weapon, you feel a strange compulsion to bow dramatically before combat and to speak with theatrical flair. This is harmless but somewhat embarrassing.
Alternative Reward - If The Gentleman Survived
If The Gentleman became the party's ally and survived the final battle, he fades away with the Harvest Realm but leaves behind his rapier as a gift.
"You fought with honor... and grace. Take this... may it serve you better than it served me. And remember... every harvest must end."
Conclusion Notes for the DM
This adventure works well as a standalone Halloween one-shot, but it can also lead to further adventures:
- The witch who cursed the Gentleman is still out there. Perhaps she has cursed other farms?
- The wealthy buyer who poisoned the water β was he working alone, or is there a larger conspiracy?
- The Pumpkin Seeds could grow into something unexpected if the players plant them...
